What is besan?

Besan or gram flour is a flour made from chana dal or split brown chickpeas popularly known as Split Bengal Gram Flour. When black chickpeas are hulled and split, we get Chana Dal. This yellow lentil is also called Split Bengal Gram Dal.

Is besan the same as chickpea flour?

Besan and Chickpea flour are not the same. Chickpea flour or garbanzo flour is ground up white chickpeas. While the flavour of both flours is similar, they are not the same flour.

What are the benefits of besan?

Besan has a typical nutty flavour of finely ground chana dal gives besan flour the super quality of creating tasty, crepes and sweets.

Besan flour is gluten-free and enriched with large amounts of proteins and folate if compared to wheat flour.
