Nimona is a traditional side dish recipe of north India (especially Uttar Pradesh, Bihar & Jharkhand).

It is usually cooked in winter because of seasonal availability of fresh green peas. However, this dish is not really commercialised. It is not usual for it to be found on the menus of restaurants or hotels.

The specialty of this dish is that it is made out of fresh green peas available in winter season in India. It is a delicious curry and can be enjoyed with rice or chapati (naan).

This recipe requires minimal spices. A tasty soupy curry, it takes just 30 minutes to cook it.

Just like Ghugni or Matar Ki Saloni, the variations of making Nimona recipe are several. Since it is a household curry there are numerous delicious recipes that are available.

This also includes a Satvik Matar Ka Nimona. which is said to be made in Varanasi or Banaras and is made without any onion or garlic.

Some recipes indicate use of tomatoes while other add potatoes.

Even vadi is added in some recipes (vadi or badi is a small mound made by grinding dal, spices together and sun-drying the mound for a few days).

Get your ingredients ready to make Matar Ka Nimona or Nimona Recipe | Fresh Green Peas Curry Recipe.

This fresh peas curry is best made with tender winter peas that are sweetest so make it while these are in season.

Coarsely grind 1.25 cup of green peas and add 0.25 cup of green peas as is.


Heat 3 tbsp oil in a pan and add cumin seed, followed by bay leaf and onion over medium flame.

Sauté onion till golden brown and add ginger-garlic-chilli paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder to fry further for 2-3 minutes.

  • 1.5 Cup Green peas Matar, Fresh or frozen
  • 1 Piece Chopped Onion Pyaz
  • 0.5 Tablespoon Ginger paste Adrak
  • 0.5 Tablespoon Garlic paste Lehsun
  • 2 Piece Green Chillies Hari Mirch, Finely Chopped
  • 1 Piece Bay leaf Tej patta
  • 0.5 Teaspoon Cumin seeds Jeera
  • 0.25 Teaspoon Turmeric Haldi Powder
  • 0.25 Teaspoon Coriander powder Dhaniya Powder
  • 0.25 Teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 2.5 Water Pani
