I love a gorgeous vibrant green tomato chutney. It makes everything you put it on look more appetising and fresh. Apart from being healthy, there are a lot of great things that happen in the flavour department for a homemade tamatar ki chutney.
Believe it or not, tomatoes aren’t always red. They can be yellow, pink, purple, black and even white! There are around 10,000 varieties of tomatoes worldwide.
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that is good for the heart and effective against certain cancers. Tomatoes are also packed with vitamins A and C, calcium and potassium.
Tomato Chutney recipe is a healthy and delicious dip or chutney and goes great with a ton of dishes and even with chips or tacos. Tamatar Ki Chutney is also paired with dosa and idli and makes them even more delicious.
How do I make homemade Tamatar Ki Chutney?
Tamatar Ki Chutney is a vibrant red chutney. Tomato chutney is all about the delicious pairing of freshness of tomatoes with a tongue tickling tadka or tempering.
All you have to do is grind roughly chopped tomatoes to a paste along with green chillies (and onions if you like). Add salt and a tempering of mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and red chillies. And it is all done.
This is pretty much like a Mexican salsa with a South Indian tadka. It is also the quickest way to make a delicious tomato chutney.
To make a satvik tomato chutney, simply avoid using onions and garlic in your recipe. Follow the rest of the process as described in the recipe card below.
What can I serve homemade Tomato Chutney with?
Tomato Chutney can be served with a dosa, idli, uttapam or paratha as a breakfast. You can also relish this tomato chutney with medu vada, samosa or any other snack that you like.
You can also serve it as a side dish with your main meals. It pairs well with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.
How can I store Tomato Chutney?
Since tomato chutney is made with fresh tomatoes & spices tomato chutney sauce should be kept under refrigeration. Tomato Chutney stays well in the fridge for 2-3 days.
Can I freeze Tomato Chutney?
You can also freeze it in an ice tray and store in the freezer for around 4 months without tempering.
When you want to use it, take out the frozen chutney, thaw it and then grind it again. Temper with spices to get the fresh flavors.
Tamatar Ki Chutney | Simple Homemade Tomato Chutney Recipe
Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan or a skillet and add mustard seeds, green chillies, red chillies and curry leaves. Stir on medium heat till you can smell the aroma (around 1 minute).
Add onions & garlic and saute till onions are translucent (around 4 minutes)..
Add the chopped tomatoes and saute further (around 2 minutes).
Add red chilli powder, salt & some grated jaggery (if not available you can use sugar). Mix well & let the tomatoes cook covered till the oil separates (around 7 minutes)

Ingredients
- 1/2 Kg Fresh Tomatoes (6-8 pieces)
- 1/4 Cup Jaggery You can use brown sugar or any other kind of sugar or sugar substitute
- 3 Piece Green Chillies
- 2 Piece Whole Red Chillies
- 10 Piece Curry Leaves One Whole Sprig
- 2 Piece Onions Finely Chopped or sliced
- 6 Piece Garlic Cloves Finely Chopped
- 0.5 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- 0.5 teaspoon Black Salt
- 2 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil
Instructions
- Get your ingredients ready to make Tamatar Ki Chutney | Simple Homemade Tomato Chutney
- Chop tomatoes, onion, garlic and green chilli. If making a satvik tamatar ki chutney, skip onions and garlic (around 3 minutes).
- Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan or a skillet and add mustard seeds, green chillies, red chillies and curry leaves. Stir on medium heat till you can smell the aroma (around 1 minute).
- Add onions & garlic and saute till onions are translucent (around 4 minutes).
- Add the chopped tomatoes and saute further (around 2 minutes).
- Add red chilli powder, salt & grated jaggery (if not available you can use sugar or a sugar substitute).
- Mix well & let the tomatoes cook covered till the oil separates (around 7 minutes)
- Your Homemade Tomato Chutney or Tamatar Ki Chutney is ready
Notes
- Saute everything on medium flame. Reduce the heat to low only at the last step.
- You can add some kind of a preservative (white vinegar) to the chutney to store them for longer.
- DO NOT add any water to this tomato chutney recipe as the tomatoes on cooking release water which is enough to cook them.
- DO NOT use a wet or dirty spoon in chutney bowl. This usually leads to a fungal growth and spoils the chutney instantly.
