How to make Vada Pav | Mumbai Vada Pao | Mumbai Vada Pav Recipe (Step by Step)

Vada Pav Recipe – Vada pav, alternatively spelt vada pao, wada pav, or wada pao, is a vegetarian fast food dish native to the state of Maharashtra. The dish consists of a deep fried potato dumpling (pakora or bonda) placed inside a bread bun sliced almost in half through the middle.

So what exactly is a Mumbai Vada Pav? Vada = deep fried potato patties and pav = burger buns. It is basically Batata (Potato) Vada sandwiched between slices of Pav along with a generous amount of sweet and spicy chutneys.

Who invented Vada Pav?

The creation of the dish is credited to Ashok Vaidya, a snack vendor who ran a street stall just outside Dadar station. Being a major commuter hub and an important station, it was seldom uncrowded.

To be innovative and unique, Vaidya reportedly came up with this recipe in 70’s to kill the hunger of the ever-moving commuters who looked like they were in desperate need of a snack that they could eat on the go.

In a way, it was like our own version of fast food. He served it up with fiery red chutney with crushed peanuts, fried green chilies and green chutney.

So, we all know that Vada Pav is absolutely delicious. Further, vada pav recipe is super simple to make. For the lack of it I crave for it in Gurgaon and gorge on it when in Mumbai or Goa.

Since, it is food for the common man, vada pav is available at every nook and corner of Mumbai. Above all, it serves its purpose for a meal and is eaten for breakfast, lunch, a snack and/or dinner. Hence, it is incredibly versatile.

Actually, you can call vada pav a desi burger. Though, it is far more satisfying and simple to assemble.

The major ingredients for a good Mumbai vada pav are vada or batter fried globules of potatoes (or batata vada), pav or a small bun, spicy green chutney and a masala (spice mix) made of red chillies and garlic. That’s it. You are done with your vada pav.

To satiate my cravings for vada pav and lack of choice in Gurgaon, I decided to take the matters in my hands. This is how the batata vada pav recipe went and we all loved it for lunch. Make it, eat it and tell me how it went down with you.
