Koshimbir Recipe - The Maharashtrian Kachumber Salad Raita

Koshimbir in the Marathi language means raita or salad. Koshimbir raita is usually prepared with Tomato & Onion or Cucumber as the main ingredients. The extension of delicious Maharashtrian koshimbir recipe over Punjabi kachumber is that the traditional Maharashtrian style tempering is poured over the mixture.

  • 1 piece tomato (टमाटर) Medium Sized; Chopped
  • 1 piece Onion (प्याज़) Medium Sized; Chopped
  • 0.25 cup Roasted Peanuts (मूँगफली) Gently Pounded
  • 1 Cup Yoghurt (दही) Beaten
  • 0.5 tablespoon Oil (तेल/घी)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Mustard Seeds (राई)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (जीरा)
  • 1 piece Green Chilli (हरीमिर्च) Chopped
  • 6 - 7 piece Curry leaves (करीपत्ता)
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida (हींग)
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander Leaves (धनिया पत्ता) Roughly Chopped; For Garnish
  • 0.5 teaspoon Sugar (चीनी)
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt (नमक)


  • First of all, add sugar to the yoghurt and beat well.
  • Then, mix chopped tomatoes & onion with crushed roasted peanuts to the beaten yoghurt
  • For the tempering/ tadka, heat oil or ghee in a tadka pan.
  • Then add mustard seeds (राई ) and let them splutter.
  • Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the cumin seeds (जीरा) and let them splutter too.
  • Add chopped green chilli and curry leaves and stir for a few seconds.
  • Just before putting off the gas flame, add a pinch of thing (हींग).
  • Put off the gas flame and immediately pour this tadka on the Tomato-Onion-Peanuts and Yogurt mixture.
  • Finally, just before serving, add salt and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve this Koshimbir as an accompaniment to the meals.
