Hotel Malabar Gurgaon, 1305, Opposite Medanta Medicity, Sector 39, Gurgaon Review
My frequent visits to Keraleeyam restaurant in Green Park abruptly stopped as a result of its sudden closure a few years back. In fact, Keraleeyam was by far one of the finest places to get great Keralite food in Delhi.
I had been so craving some good Kerala, Malabari food after a bit of a letdown at Appus Hotel INA Market, when someone suggested Hotel Malabar in Sector 39, Gurgaon.
Hotel Malabar Gurgaon is not too difficult to find. It is in the village market right opposite Medanta Medicity, Gurgaon. The restaurant is actually really easy to spot, and a landmark to remember is Medanta, Medicity.
Since cooperative societies and corporations populate this sector, the location becomes advantageous for the Malabar Hotel. It also benefits from traffic that throngs Medanta Medicity as well as its Keralite employees.
As you turn in you can’t miss the loud red board with equally red if not redder wall paint on the facade. Interestingly, there is more to Malabar Hotel – Malabar Jewellers and Malabar Tours and Travels.
It seems all three form a group. They also have a unit in Sarai Julena in New Friends Colony, New Delhi. Hotel Malabar in Sarai Julena also serves some great food at really affordable prices.
As I entered Malabar Hotel, I was a bit amazed to find it almost half full despite the entity being hole in the wall kind. This was around 2:30 PM in the afternoon.
Tables in this 32-cover restaurant were turning quickly and it was full in no time. In fact, Malabar Hotel Gurgaon seemed a popular place to eat with people – a lot of them wearing office badges.
The servers were welcoming and smiling which was warming. Water was served immediately with the menu. Food order was taken pronto. Queries were answered with the right information.
Food View @ Hotel Malabar Gurgaon
So between the two of us, we ordered Alleppey Chicken Curry (Rs.140), Chicken Chettinad (Rs.140), Appam (Rs.8) and Malabar Spl Chicken Biryani (Rs.130).
Of course, It was impressive. surprisingly, the portions for the prices were huge. However, what was disappointing was that not even a single dish with Fish, Prawn and Mutton were available.
“No Sapply” was the answer when I inquired.
As a matter of fact, the Malabar Spl Chicken Biryani was quite well done. In addition, it was really fragrant and full of chicken pre-cooked in masalas.
The superb biryani comes with a small papad, raita and Kerala lemon pickle. However, the chicken dishes seemed to have roasted chicken added to the spicy gravies which was not inspiring.
But the fact that the chicken was dry did not impress me. On the other hand, the gravies and appams were outstanding. Incidentally, the food portions were quite large and hence had to be parcelled for home.
What I did find funny was the fact that the overzealous server presented the bill even before we completed our lunch.
To Sum-It-Up: While Malabar Hotel is a great place to have affordable Malayali food, their finer nuances are not perfect; So you’ll have to seek them somewhere else.
The restaurant is actually really easy to spot, and a landmark to remember is Medanta, Medicity. And so I’ll be heading back for some mutton and seafood at Hotel Malabar for sure.
