The Story Behind Fat Fish Arpora Goa by Pooja Sarin & Prashant Korgaonkar

Fat Fish Arpora Goa seems to have grown organically and their food definitely has made a mark.

Fat Fish Restaurant Arpora Goa offers an extensive choice of Goan Portuguese & Hindu Saraswat dishes in a sprawling precinct located on Calangute-Arpora Road in Bardez North Goa.

It is owned by Pooja Sarin (fashion designer) & Prashant Korgaonkar (a beach shack owner) in  2012. Fat Fish brought together two distinct Goan flavours, Goan Portuguese and Hindu Saraswat cuisines, but didn’t stop at that.

Today, the Fat Fish menu includes dishes from Goan Portuguese, Continental, Hindu Saraswat, Konkan, North Indian with Tandoor & Italian cuisines. They even have burgers & pizzas on their menu.

Right from oysters, squids clams, shrimps, lobsters, pomfret, king fish, Fat Fish serves all kinds of seafood, perfectly aligning good food with heartwarming culture, and pleasant weather.

Fat Fish is located on Calangute Arpora Road opposite what is now the Arpora Saturday night market at the junction of the road which connects the Calangute Arpora to the Titos lane in Baga.

The Ambience at Fat Fish Arpora - Elegant & Cosy with Family & Friends

Fat Fish Arpora Goa is designed modestly and yet looks elegant.

Fat Fish Arpora in Goa is located on Calangute-Arpora Road so its impossible for anyone on that road to miss it. From the outside, you realised it is big, very airy and open bar and restaurant.

I had heard a lot about it and so had to try it this time I was there. The feedback was diversely polarised where my hotelier friends narrated it to be average while one of my big time food friends found it to be spectacular.

I visited Fat Fish Goa located on Calangute-Arpora road myself with three of my friends and this is my take on Fat Fish – Bar & Restaurant.

Fat fish arpora – a family favourite

I realised Fat Fish is a very popular bar & restaurant with local families as well as tourists, and even in these Covid-19 times, it was full to its last table and had people waiting.

I was in a cab with friends and as we alighted I noticed that there was ample parking available. We walked in through the open corridor & I noticed that there was a waiting area for people to sit while waiting for their tables.

The rustic thatched roof, the long bar and the tiled tables with their black, cushioned chairs give Fat Fish a trendy yet relaxed ambience and that was a good sign.

We perhaps waited for a few minutes before one of the restaurant captains, deposited us on our table. In fact, he remembered my friends from their previous visit that was a few months back. Full marks to this acknowledgement.

The decor of the place is modest but elegant as I observed. The furniture is comfortable and well appointed. At the rear is their bar with big sized flat screens appropriately mounted on the wall.

Apart from the music, the bar and restaurant offers the match of the day with the catch of the day to eat. In fact bar counter looks good & works perfectly to watch an evening football or cricket match with mates over drinks.

But do note while they have a big seating capacity, it is usually houseful during peak hours especially on weekends when their live band plays as well, so do plan accordingly.

A downside – Tables of the house are too closely placed making privacy a luxury for romancing couples. Having said that, it is nonetheless a good place as a casual dinner with a nice ambience and a chill vibe.

The Cuisine at Fat Fish Arpora - A Menu with a Vast Array of Dishes

Fat Fish serves choicest of dishes from Goan Portuguese, Continental, Hindu Saraswat, Konkan, North Indian cuisines.

Fat Fish Chicken Chilly Fry – Chicken chilly fry was not like the usual Indianised chilli chicken in Chinese style. It was not fried either, but more of sautéed soft. However, it was a tasteful melange of tangy, slightly sweet and spicy (not chilli, though it had green chillies) flavours in a very good portion. I ended up loading up my every forkful with green chillies to get my kick.

Fat Fish Prawns Rava Fry – These traditional Goan prawns are first marinated and then coated with sooji and deep fried to get a delicious crunchy snack that is hard to resist. The prawns were fried just right to give the crispy outside and soft inside taste with their tails nicely fried too. The portion was drenched in a silken sauce and served with salad & potato wedges. It was polished off in no time by all at the table.

Fat Fish Butter Garlic Prawns – This was the second starter to land up on our table. The good sized portion of these delicious butter garlic prawns had eight (8) prawns that were served with a decent number of potato wedges and some salad. The prawns were fresh and perfectly cooked in a thick yet smooth butter garlic sauce in which the fresh taste of the juicy prawns was not dwarfed by the flavourful butter and garlic sauce. It was just rightly spiced to deliciousness.

Fat Fish Lobster Thermidor – One of us wanted to have a lobster as a starter. Lobsters were presented on the table for us to select from and then in a few minutes Lobster Thermidor appeared smeared in its rich, creamy gravy.

Lobster Thermidor was simply brilliantly creamy, subtle yet full of flavour. A bouquet of sautéed vegetables and rice accompanied the lobster, so the dish was indeed quite huge. However, I couldn’t taste the wine which is an essential ingredient of the Thermidor sauce.

Fat Fish Prawn Curry Rice – We ordered prawn curry rice for dinner after our starters. The curry had a nice blend of spices and a decent number of good sized prawns as well. The white steam rice was well cooked and it was sufficient for two people.

Fat Fish Goan Thali (Fish) – I had heard a lot about the Fat Fish Goan Fish Thali from my foodie fried. It is offered daily, though only during the lunch hour & is assembled by Goan ladies who come in only for making Fat Fish thali.

So, I went back once more just to eat this famed Goan Fish Thali. I must insist that you book your Fat Fish Goan fish thali a day in advance, since you won’t be able to order it anyway after 3:30 PM. They do have a Goan Thali with Chicken also if you fancy that, as a consolation.

The Fat Fish Thali spreads out like a fan with seven katori portions laid out around a rice plate with a papad and the fried fish of the day. The fish is usually the King Fish.

Gracing the Fish Thali are delicious portions of kismoor (dried shrimp salad), tisrya (clams) curry, prawn curry, tarli (sardine) curry, chimborya (crab) kalwan, chawli shenga (green beans) bhaji, tendli (ivy gourd) bhaji and rava fried surmai (king fish) with rice, salad, papad and pickle.

Even a few local Goans I know say that that Fat Fish Goan Thali (fish) is the closest one can get to the authenticity of local Goan cuisine. And, a single that is so huge that it can easily be good for two.

Thank you my friends! Even, I loved it. For delicious and massive fish thalis that serve up a selection of really fresh seafood, and Goan dishes done right, Fat Fish Arpora Goa deserves a visit.

Fat Fish Arpora Goa - Food Experience Review

Dear Readers! Please note that this is not a review that has been paid for by the outlet or sponsored by an agency for the outlet.

For the first visit, we visited Fat Fish in the evening. It was a short drive from where my friends were staying and with a driver along getting there was not a hitch.

Since they have a parking tucked away, we parked and alighted conveniently. We were received at the entrance by a Captain and ushered in to the main restaurant precinct. He did recognise one of my friends from his previous visit.

It took a few minutes before we were comfortably seated at our table. A steward came and presented the menus. As we considered fat fish food and placed the order for starters, one of us decided to have a lobster. The steward brought a few lobsters to the table to choose from. The order taking was fine.

I ordered a beer and fat fish food started landing up on the table. Unexpectedly the beer was cool but not cold. The second beer had to be followed up, after I told them I wanted a really cold beer. After the order, it took me two reminders to get my hands on the pint.

Lobster Thermidor took some time to appear, but that was expected. Food service was quite decent and alright.
