The Story Behind Sai Krupa Porvorim Goa by

Sai Krupa Porvorim a hidden gem of Goan cuisine is a favourite with locals and tourists alike.

Sai Krupa Family Restaurant & Bar is located in Porvorim, Sangolda behind Navtara restaurant on the main Chogm Road. Sai Krupa Restaurant is tucked away in a small and narrow by-lane in Porvorim, the hunt for this place is worth the food it serves.

It is difficult to find it first, you may just enter a wrong by-lane and turnaround, but once found, you’ll never forget this hidden gem for Goan seafood. It is just the place to go to when you don’t need anything fancy. The courteous & helpful staff will make you feel completely at home.

Sai Krupa Porvorim is owned and managed by Anil Naik and his wife. His father Shivram Naik, also a restauranteur used to run Sanil Bar & Restaurant also in Porvorim. Anil joined his father and turned the business into a roaring success.

So, Sanil is run essentially by a Hindu family who serve an array of seafood dishes from spicy coconut crab xec xec, tisryo sukhem (a dry clams dish) and a catch of the day.

Sai Krupa was conceived to replace Sanil Bar & Restaurant since the location of Sanil Bar was not owned by the Naik family. Hence, they shifted to the new venue close to the previous location in Porvorim under a new name – Sai Krupa.

Sai Krupa Sangolda is an out and out fish heaven, a perfect fish stop for fishiterians.

Auranomy - The Ambience at Sai Krupa Porvorim - Elegant & Cosy for Gatherings

Sai Krupa Porvorim Goa is modestly designed though roomy and airy. It has a modest aura that people like.

As you enter the lane where this three storied building that house Sai Krupa is located you realise its almost a dead end. The good part is it is located in between of a green forest. Apart from greenery, adequate street side parking is also present that can accommodate a large number of vehicles.

I feel that the restaurant security deputed outside can also be trained to advise the luncheon visitors to park properly. If you reach early, you may easily park at the prime & prized parking just next to stairs leading to the lunch hall.

Once in the lunch hall, you realise that Sai Krupa family restaurant is modestly designed though it is still roomy and airy. Even though Sai Krupa is not air-conditioned, air-cooling doesn’t let you feel hot even during lunch hours.

The furniture in the restaurant is functional but well appointed for comfort. At one end of the hall is the washroom as well as the hand wash facility. The good part is that this area is separated by a closed door for privacy.

At the same level their bar is also appointed that allows the service for beverages as raid as of food.

In my opinion, Sai Krupa is good for both big and small family and friends gathering. However, please don’t expect it to be a destination for romance, since the fame of Goan food of this restaurant keeps it quite full to its rafters.

Perhaps this modest aura of Sai Krupa is the choice that people like about this hidden gem.

Gastronomy - The Cuisine at Sai Krupa Porvorim - My Food Experience & Review of the Food at Sai Krupa

Gastronomy - Sai Krupa serves choicest of dishes from local Goan cuisine. Here is a rundown.

I have been to Sai Krupa Porvorim twice during my this trip to Goa and found the food to be made with a homely touch and hence excellent. The locals also endorse Sai Krupa for the authenticity and taste of good Goan food.

Sai Krupa in my opinion is a quite decent and affordable restaurant serving simple yet tasty staple Goan seafood and that includes their thali as well that is available for dinner as well.

Apart from staple Goan seafood, Sai Krupa menu also offers a decent array of North Indian dishes as well. The tandoori breads are a part of the Sai Krupa menu as well. I don’t remember noticing Chinese on their menu but I may be wrong, so do check. Here is rundown on what I ordered and what was it like.

Sai Krupa Special Fish Thali – The Sai Krupa Special Fish Thali comes with squid ambot tik, clams sukkha, crab xec xec, 1  big fillet of rava fried kingfish, a prawn curry, vegetable salad, pickle, sol kadi and lady finger bhaji with boiled Goan fat rice. Four of us shared the thali and found it to be fresh, delicious and undoubtedly a value for money.

Sai Krupa Carb Kolhapuri – Coriander seeds, peppercorns, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise, cardamom pods, cumin seeds, dry red chillies and poppy seeds are dry roasted and ground into a fiery spice mix, which is then used to flavour Kolhapur’s traditional crab curry. Spiked with the sourness of tamarind and stirred with the sweetness of coconut milk, this crab delicacy is a must-try at Sai Krupa Porvorim. It goes well with tandoori roti.

Sai Krupa Bombil Rava Fry (Bombay Duck) – A fantastic bite sized starter that goes very well to build up an appetite. When shallow fried with a coating of semolina and rice-flour, the lizard fish attains a crisp exterior with soft and buttery texture inside.  The succulent Bombil Rava Fry is a much sought after dish on the menu of any sea food restaurant including Sai Krupa.

Sai Krupa Crab Xec Xec – Crab Xec Xec or Shek Shek as it’s called is a traditional Goan crab curry. The curry at Sai Krupa was mildly spicy but without overpowering the flavours of the crab. The masala had a an enriched taste of roasted spices, coconut, onions, ginger & garlic in which the crabs were simmered. It was beautifully decadent crab masala dish that went equally well with boiled rice and tandoori roti. Do note that the crab portions at Sai Krupa are really huge.

Sai Krupa Fish Rava Fry – This was an excellent rava fish fry that was suggested by the steward attending our table. Just like the bombil, it was a brilliant shallow fried modoso fish, if I remember the name correctly, again with a coating of semolina and rice-flour. The modoso was fresh and had a crisp exterior with soft and buttery texture inside and was just delicious.

So, if you are looking for an off-the-beaten-track fish thali or seafood place in North Goa that also qualifies as a Goan hidden gem, then Sai Krupa Family Restaurant & Bar is just the place.

It’s a family friendly restaurant located slightly on the interiors where you will find a lot of Goan locals as well as foreign tourists, that gives Sai Krupa a stamp for its taste.

Serviconomy - Sai Krupa Porvorim Goa

Serviconomy or service experience at Sai Krupa Restaurant Porvorim

The service was fast and efficient even for Sai Krupa Goan Fish Thali. You can only find a fault with the stewards, only if that is what you want to find. My order was taken rapidly and freshly made food was served within expected timeframe for a thali & curries. Tandoori roti always came in hot and not just warm.

I give them full marks for running a meticulous, clean & hygienic enterprise. Sai Krupa has been very hospitable and always served delicious food on my visits.

I would rank Sai Krupa Porvorim as a part of my best Goan restaurants list. I hope that you’ll concur with it.
