Chuzenji Temple is an ancient temple on Lake Chuzenji featuring a large statue of Kannon, the Buddhist thousand-armed goddess of mercy.

Chuzenji Temple was built in 784 by Shodo Shonin, the founder of Nikko Kaisan, and is a World Heritage Site.

Chuzenji Temple stands on the eastern bank of Lake Chuzenjiko, which was named after the temple. Chuzenji Temple’s main object of worship is a six meter tall statue of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

The statue is unique for being carved out of a tree which is still rooted into the ground today. The temple is also home to several historically significant Buddha statues.
