What is Sappira? Sappira is the Tamil name for Bixa orellana or Annatto. In the same language it is also called Kongaram. Sappira is a shrub native to a region between northern South America and Mexico. Sappira is grown in many countries worldwide. The tree is best known as the source of annatto, a natural orange-red condiment obtained from the waxy arils that cover its seeds. Sappira, commonly called annato or achiote, is an evergreen tropical shrub or small tree that is native to tropical parts of Central and South America.
