What is Pipo? Pipo (皮波) is the Chinese name for Indian Long Pepper (Piper longum). Pipo is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. Pipo was freely used alongside common black pepper in kitchens from ancient Rome to Renaissance Europe. But the arrival of chiles from the New World and the rising popularity of black pepper shoved Pipo out of the culinary spotlight.
