Surat consumes a significant amount of eggs, making it the Egg Eating Capital of India. The egg production capital is faraway in Tamil Nadu. This post is about me reaching Chandan Omlet and my experience there.

So as the story goes, Sujit and I had left Goa and were destined to stop in Ahmedabad to attend Shekhar Da’s (Sujit’s badminton partner) daughter’s wedding.

The room booking was later by a day for us, so we had to break our journey. Aa luck had it, Tyagi’s sister was married in Surat, and we were welcomed by Soni & Ashu to rest for the night at their home.

To top it all, Ashu took us shopping, and then when we spoke about Eggs and Surat, he brought us instantly to Chandan Omlet despite being a staunch vegetarian himself.

The famously vegetarian state of Gujarat in northwestern India is also famously dry. And yet after dark in many large cities, out come the laaris, street food carts.

Many of these traffick in an endless variety of egg dishes well-suited to meet the restorative demands of anyone who happens to be at the roadside.

It’s so popular that people often wait in line to get a table, as we did, and finally got one. They have a sprawling parking space for cars and two-wheelers.

As we sat down, we observed that the ambience was quite lively and packed with people. We were not prepared for such hustle and bustle, especially on a Tuesday.

Despite having ample seating and parking spaces, the place was still crowded.

The menu was already placed on the table, and the server was hovering around, scouting for our food order.

Imagine a menu making a unique theme of everything eggs. Starters. Rice. Omelettes. Fried eggs. With green garlic. And unusual spices.

You will definitely gain 5 kg after eating here if you order your dishes cooked in butter, and it is well worth it. It’s an action-packed heaven for egg lovers.

So, while I was clicking the photos, Sujit, the chef, pondered over the menu for a while and called out to the hovering server.

Since they have an amazing array of items, this took a bit of time. Finally, Sujit decided to order Eggs Lahori & Eggs Surti Taka tak, both cooked in butter.

So here we were, perched at nothing too fancy about the ambience, but that’s not what we were there for anyway.

Chandan Omlet Center is a spacious precinct with a minimal structure.

Chandan Omlet Center actually looks like a restructured godown, with a lot of tables in the centre to cater to the huge crowd.

Their kitchen is an open L-shaped space, where the left flank serves as a salad prep counter, and the side up ahead is where their cooking ranges are.

The entire L kitchen was adeptly manned and in furious action mode. The billing counter where the owner sat was adjacent to this flank.

The rest of the area was empty and converted into a two-wheeler parking space if there is overcrowding in the main parking.

Adjoining the four-wheeler parking, they have a private dining area (PDA) as well for vegetarians who don’t want their love for eggs to be discovered.

This entire area was very well managed without any ruffling of anyone’s feathers. So this is a huge accomplishment for Chandan Omlet.

The restaurant’s casual ambience is quite inviting, with a clean and well-lit seating area. I was closely observing all this and waiting for our order, which finally arrived.

So the first to land at our table was buttered pav bread and onion-tomato salad. Both of these were rapidly followed by Eggs Lahori and Surti Eggs Taka tak.

In my opinion, Chandan Omelette Center is a paradise for egg lovers in Surat, boasting over 150 creative egg dishes like egg kheema, gotalo, and unique garlic gravies.

The dishes at Chandan are well-portioned, rich in flavour, and layered with cheese, butter, and spices that make each bite memorable.

Our menu order comprised:

Eggs Lahori, that was cheesy but flavourful and spicy, so I liked it very much.

Surti Egg Taka tak was also great and similar, but the spices were less accentuated.
