What is Achuete? Achuete is the Tagalog name for Bixa orellana or Annatto. It is also called Achwete & Atsuete in the same language. Achuete is a shrub native to a region between northern South America and Mexico. Achuete is grown in many countries worldwide. The tree is best known as the source of annatto, a natural orange-red condiment obtained from the waxy arils that cover its seeds. Achuete, commonly called annato or achiote, is an evergreen tropical shrub or small tree that is native to tropical parts of Central and South America.
