Guleria Dhaba Paprola Kangra
A Small but busy outlet on the road to Jawala ji in Kangra Himachal Pradesh
During my visit to Ankur Guleria’s home & Pong Dam in Kangra, we decided to go to Mata Jawalamukhi or Jawala ji to offer our obeisance to the goddess.
Apart from its sacred flames, Mata Jawalamukhi Shaktipeeth temple is known for its gold-domed shrines & panoramic mountain views.
It was a short drive, just 40 kms, to the divine temple, and we decided to leave Nandpur Bhatoli around noon after having breakfast.
Pooja Guleria was kind enough to fix toast and scrambled eggs for breakfast from her well-stocked kitchen.
In the meantime, Ankur took me around his home. The time was now noon, and we had not left Nandpur Bhatoli yet.
If you recollect, in this part of the Kangra, roads do not exist. So it’s normal for your vehicle to get battered off-roading on the stony & rocky village passage.

Fortunately, the neighbouring railway track that favours the toy train there has an underpass for vehicles in this section, after which the tar road is available.

So we were on the road heading towards Mata Jawalamukhi to pay our respects. The entire drive was filled with scenic beauty and entirely joyous.
The time now was 1530 hrs, and we hadn’t had our lunch before leaving. So here we were, meandering through the hills of Haripur-Guler to reach Jawala ji Road.
It was on Jawala Ji Road in Paprola that I spotted Guleria Dhaba and stopped instantly.

How did I stumble upon Guleria Dhaba?
Guleria Dhaba must be a blessing for every hungry human, since in that neighbourhood, which is a Highway as well, nothing else is available.
So I immediately halted upon seeing this magical Dhaba emerge and asked everyone to stop discussing the pros and cons of the empty outlet.
Though without any customers, Guleria Dhaba was user-friendly. It served local food that people around would make at home, had a tuck shop for travellers and was clean.
Their menu was pasted alongside the roof covering the dhaba, along with non-vegetarian dishes that we decided not to order since we were enroute to Jawala ji.
Most of the dishes mentioned in the menu were not available, which usually happens with Dhabas in the mountains with trickling business.
As a result, we decided to order their preparations for the day, including Kadhi, Rajma and Jeera aloo with parathas.

The dhaba came into action as soon as the order was received. There were no other customers, so all the staff were working exclusively for us.
Hence, the food appeared at our table as fast as the order was placed. We served ourselves serenaded by nature’s bounty. Here is what the fare tasted like:
Aloo Jeera: Potatoes were roasted with ample cumin (jeera), and they were simple, earthy, with aromatic flavours. They had a dry, crisp texture rather than a wet curry, making it a perfect, comforting side for the accompanying paratha.
Rajma Masala: Rajma had a hearty blend of spices (coriander, cumin, cloves, etc.) that gave it a deep, complex, and genuine mountain taste, reminiscent of roadside dhabas. They were comforting and rustic, similar to home-cooked food.
Kadhi: It was spicy with a rich and comforting yoghurt-based gravy. The only thing other and unusual than a usual Punjabi kadhi was that this pahadi kadhi didn’t have pakodas, instead of which it has Gobhi or cauliflower immersed in it. It tasted good enough for everyone, and it was different that made it unique too.
