It is a place where the air is thick with the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans (I couldn’t smell any) and sizzling curry leaves (didn’t hear these too), and where the glamour isn’t found in neon signs, but in the gleaming brass of the davara-tumblers and the unwavering consistency of its recipes.

Yet, despite its high-profile clientele, the cafe has maintained a grounded, unpretentious soul.
The interior is a nod to the classic South Indian “Udupi” style—functional, clean, and warm. The walls are often adorned with photographs and memorabilia that hint at its long-standing history in the capital.
There is a specific rhythm to the room: the metallic clinking of steel spoons, the soft murmur of patrons discussing politics or art, and the brisk, efficient movement of the waitstaff in their traditional white uniforms.
It is an atmosphere that invites you to slow down, even if the queue outside suggests otherwise.

The star of the show is, indisputably, the Mysore Masala Dosa. Unlike the thin, paper-like varieties found elsewhere, the dosa here has a substantial, golden-brown crust with a soft, spongy interior.

So, how Did I Get to the Mysore Cafe?
There is a story behind everything
Sujit & I were taking a break in Gurgaon on our sojourn from Goa to Kolkata. Post this short break, we would depart for Kolkata by road.
One fine day, after utter persistence, we drove off towards Samrat Hotel in Chankyapuri to meet our college senior, Kamal Kumar.
As luck would have it, it was late afternoon when we departed from Gurgaon, and we were famished.
Kamal has been praising Mysore Cafe South Avenue for a while. He used to mention it as regularly as I visited him.
He claimed to be a regular visitor to the Mysore Cafe for a fast and filling afternoon meal or an early evening snack.
Having lived in Delhi and not too far from Chankyapuri, I wasn’t aware that such an outlet even existed and that too in an area like Chankyapuri.
So I was fairly shocked to find this acclaimed culinary gem in Lutyens Delhi, as Kamal insisted it was.
Mysore Cafe is located close to the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan, situated in the MP hostel blocks on South Avenue.
Being situated near the President’s Home (Rashtrapati Bhavan), MP Hostels, Sena Bhawan and some Ministry workplaces close by, there’s a steady stream of customers of such meals that doesn’t weigh heavily on your pocket.
The Stark Reality of Mysore Cafe
There is a REAL story behind everything
However, the stark reality is that Mysore Cafe is a hole-in-the-wall outlet situated in an alleyway of a very prestigious location, Tyagraj Marg.
Since its menu is incredibly cheap, it is thronged by mortals from all strata of the Delhi society to no end. People actually wait in queues to get their tables, as did we.
And, the outlet is situated in a slim passage (gali), hidden from the main roads, making it difficult to find unless you have someone who has visited it with you.
Frequented by enthusiastic cyclists, it appears to be a standard gang hangout place for them, particularly on weekends.
So, the word-of-mouth promotion is working for them. One of their walls carries the images of the biking teams that go to them regularly.
As soon as you enter the tiny precinct, you see that the six-table structure inside this tiny restaurant completes its cramped seating arrangement.
So, you could find yourself sharing seats effectively, and you can’t say no to this.
The green panelled walls adorn a few paintings, pictures of God, advertisements, bookshelves, a menu board and notices.
There is a black and white picture showing the owner serving Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.
So, it’s not the place you’ll go for the atmosphere. Nonetheless, the entire vibe of the outlet is quaint but nonetheless rushed, being a budget restaurant.
Nonetheless, I really feel Kannadigas will discover such a restaurant welcoming and nostalgic after seeing the cafe’s title written in enormous, understandable Kannada letters proper above the English letters.
The atmosphere may additionally remind them of small eating places down south. Such eating places exist even to this present day in Bangalore and other locations.
The location of Mysore Cafe is prime; nonetheless, the congestion offered by the restaurant and the area for parking are huge negatives.
Nonetheless, the place is often full, and one has to wait for 20 minutes at the very least.
So, why should we go to this quaint, old-school Mysore cafe in Chanakyapuri?
It affords a comfy Kannadiga winter breakfast/ lunch experience. Kannadigas will feel welcoming and nostalgic after seeing the cafe’s name written in huge Kannada letters right above the English letters! The ambience will remind them of small restaurants down south.
Nonetheless, the place can really feel stuffy with no air conditioning, and make the experience of having fun with a sizzling meal a bit disagreeable in Delhi’s summer heat.
The Food & Service
How we were treated and what all did we order?
Every review before mine is definitely written by people who seem to have eaten South Indian food for the first time and have no clue that they ate the worst ever South Indian food.
The place is unhygienic, the food is the absolute worst, and nothing makes sense about who writes such mind-boggling reviews!
They often run out of appes, idlis and vadas, so make sure to go early in the mornings to have those.
I even got tasteless white water rather than coconut chutney, and the tomato-onion chutney was long gone.
Secondly, the portion sizes are small, and you’ll need to have at least 1.5 dosa or two dishes to satiate your stomach. My dosa was served cold, and nothing suggested the Mysoreness in it.
The cold coffee I asked for was made out of old and rancid milk and was undrinkable.
I don’t blame the owner because I didn’t see one bit of pretentiousness in them to be more than what exactly they are, which is subpar.
Cyclists and people who like that Sunday morning feel by eating at a quaint place have built hype for a place which is really horrible in taste.
There is trash outside the restaurant that monkeys play with, making the area stink. In my opinion, I’ll not revisit the outlet again.
