The Markandeya Purana is traditionally classified as one of the eighteen major Mahapuranas of ancient Indian literature.
Unlike many other Puranic texts that focus heavily on sectarian doctrines or elaborate devotional rituals dedicated to a specific deity, the Markandeya Purana is celebrated for its predominantly narrative and non-sectarian character.
Scholar F. Eden Pargiter divided the text into five distinct structural sections:
- Cantos 1–9 (The Wise Birds): Sage Jaimini, a disciple of Vyasa, approaches Sage Markandeya to resolve four specific doubts arising from the Mahabharata. Markandeya directs him to four wise, celestial-born birds living in the Vindhya mountains, who answer his queries in detail.
- Cantos 10–44 (Discourses of Sumati/Jada): Frame narratives where Sumati (nicknamed Jada due to his outward appearance of stupidity) expounds deep philosophical truths to his father regarding karma, rebirth, hellish realms, and the practice of Yoga.
- Cantos 45–80 (Markandeya and Kraustuki): The original core of the Purana, featuring discourse between Sage Markandeya and his disciple Kraustuki regarding cosmogony, creation, genealogies, and righteous living.
- Cantos 81–93 (The Devi Mahatmya): A famous standalone poetic masterpiece inserted into the Purana, narrated by Sage Medhas, glorifying the Supreme Goddess (Mahamaya/Chandika).
- Cantos 94–136 (Resumed Discourses & Dynastic Histories): Continuation of Markandeya’s instruction to Kraustuki, concluding with the royal genealogies and stories of ancient monarchs.

What is notable in the Markandeya Purana?
Key Stories and Teachings of Markandeya Purana
1. The Four Questions of Jaimini
Sage Jaimini seeks answers to four major moral and philosophical paradoxes from the Mahabharata:
- Why Lord Vishnu assumed human form despite being devoid of material attributes.
- Why Draupadi became the common wife of the five Pandava brothers.
- Why Balarama underwent penance for the unintentional slaying of a Brahmin.
- Why Draupadi’s five young sons perished prematurely in battle.
The celestial birds resolve these questions by highlighting the complex workings of karma, partial divine incarnations, and the fulfilment of cosmic destinies.
2. The Ordeal of King Harischandra
A major narrative highlight is the poignant legend of King Harischandra. Known for his unyielding commitment to truth and righteousness, Harischandra surrenders his vast kingdom, wealth, and family to satisfy the test of Sage Visvamitra.
Reduced to working as a servant at a cremation ground in Varanasi, he maintains his integrity through extreme suffering.
Impressed by his steadfast devotion to Dharma, the gods step in, restore his son to life, and grant heavenly liberation to the king and his loyal subjects.
3. The Legend of Madalasa and Queenly Wisdom
Queen Madalasa, wife of King Kuvalayasva (Ritadhvaja), represents the ideal balance of spiritual illumination and regal responsibility.
She instructs her sons from infancy in self-realisation and non-attachment, guiding the eldest ones toward ascetic liberation.
When educating her youngest son, Alarka, at the king’s request, she delivers comprehensive discourses on statecraft, self-discipline, social duties (varna-dharma), life stages (ashrama-dharma), and proper conduct.
4. The Devi Mahatmya
The Devi Mahatmya (also known as the Durga Saptashati) forms the liturgical core of Goddess worship in Northern and Eastern India.
It recounts the cosmic battles of Goddess Chandika/Durga against demonic forces such as Mahishasura, Chanda, Munda, and Shumbha-Nishumbha, depicting the Divine Mother as the ultimate cosmic power that protects righteousness.
