This volume contains Part IV of the Brahmanda Purana (translated and annotated by Dr G. V. Tagare), covering the Upasamhara Pada (Section IV, Chapters 1–4) and the beginning of the Lalitopakhyana (Lalita Mahatmya, Chapters 5–30).
1. Upasamhara Pada (Chapters 1–4): Cosmic Dissolution & Creation
- The Process of Dissolution (Pratisargah): Suta recounts the cyclical annihilation of the universe through the lens of Sankhya philosophy. Dissolution is classified into three distinct categories:
- Naimittika (Periodic): Occurs at the end of a Kalpa (a day of Brahma) when the world is destroyed by intense heat (seven suns), fire, and torrential deluge (Ekarnava), after which Brahma slumbers through his night.
- Prakrtika (Elemental): The absolute reabsorption of the primary Tattvas back into Prakrti upon the end of Brahma’s lifespan.
- Atyantika (Ultimate): Individual liberation (Atyantika) achieved through spiritual wisdom (Jnana).
- Cosmic Structure & Time Measurement: Explains the detailed hierarchy of the 14 Manus, the linear units of time (from Nimesha to Parardha), and the geography of the cosmic realms. It details the seven upper worlds (Bhurloka to Satyaloka) and thirty lower hells (Narakas), along with the specific karmic transgressions that result in torment within them.
2. Lalitopakhyana (Chapters 5–30): The Triumph of Parashakti
- Introduction & Dravidian Background: Added as an independent Shakta treatise set in Kanci (Kanjeevaram), this section shifts the focus to the Supreme Goddess Lalita (Parashakti) and her consort Kamesvara.
- Inciting Incidents: Begins with Durvasas cursing Indra for disrespecting a divine garland, leading to Indra’s loss of splendour, the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the manifestation of Mohini, and the emergence of the formidable demon Bhandasura.
- Manifestation & Cosmic War: Devatas perform penance to invoke Para Shakti. Goddess Lalita emerges from the sacrificial fire, marries Kamesvara, and leads a grand military campaign against Bhandasura.
- Defeat of Bhandasura & Aftermath: Describes the complex battles fought by Lalita’s Shakti armies and generals (including Shyamala, Varahi, and Gananatha) using miraculous missiles. After Bhandasura and his sons are slain and his capital Sunyaka is burned, the god of love (Madana/Kamadeva) is resurrected, culminating in the marriage of Shiva and Parvati and the birth of Karttikeya.
