Swarn Villa Udaipur Review: Honestly it has Splendid Ambience but it is Overwhelmed by Unfortunate Realities
Travel Type: Road trip / Solo stopover
A road trip from Gurgaon to Udaipur is meant to be a rewarding journey across Rajasthan’s scenic highways, but after nearly 15 relentless hours behind the wheel from Gurgaon to Ahmedabad and then to Udaipur, it had a different story to tell.
Having driven all the way from Ahmedabad to Udaipur —what a weary traveller craves most is a seamless check-in, basic comforts, clear communication, and a restful night’s sleep.
Unfortunately, my decision to stay at The Swarn Villa Udaipur, and not at anyother hotels near Udaipur, based on a friend’s recommendation, turned out to be an absolute disaster from start to finish.
I ignored the travel warning that my mind was giving me and ventured into this unit. So at the end this episode happened so being a guest house, I won’t classify as a Udaipur resort review.
If you have followed my blog you’ll realise that this is perhaps the worst of my hotel reviews India and not just the worst of hotel reviews Udaipur.
From misleading pricing to substandard amenities, terrible service, and complete lack of hospitality of this budget hotel Udaipur, my experience was deeply frustrating.
Here is a detailed breakdown of my stay and a travel warning Udaipur, and why I strongly advise fellow road-trippers and travellers to think twice before booking this property.

Location and Approach: Isolated and Difficult to Access
The first signs of trouble began before I even stepped foot on the property.
Contrary to what its name suggests, The Swarn Villa is not located in the vibrant, heritage-filled heart of Udaipur.
It is situated 30 kilometres out of Udaipur, far away from the city center, key attractions, or even basic commercial hubs. This I was informed off by Mr. Satnam Singh.
To make matters worse, the last stretch leading up to the property is in appalling condition.
The approach roads are entirely non-metal and broken, filled with deep ruts, dust, potholes and uneven terrain. This I was not informed off by Mr. Satnam Singh or his son Gurpreet Singh.
After navigating a gruelling 15-hour drive, manoeuvring through broken, unpaved tracks in the dark was both stressful and hard on the vehicle.
If you are expecting a smooth, hassle-free arrival, this location will disappoint you completely, as it turned out at the end of my road trip Udaipur.
Check-in & Pricing Tactics
Misleading Promises and Unprofessional Behaviour
The check-in experience was where the ordeal truly escalated into an outright nightmare.
Prior to my arrival, I had spoken with the owner, Mr. Satnam Singh through my friend, had promised me an agreed tariff of Rs. 1,500 – 2,000 per night.
However, upon arriving late in the afternoon, exhausted and desperate for rest, I was abruptly informed that the rate was actually Rs. 3,500 per night for two nights.
This sudden 133% price hike at the front desk felt like a classic bait-and-switch tactic, which is hotel overcharging and entirely deceitful & unprofessional.
Given the poor location and the sheer disappointment of the setup, I decided I would only stay for a single night instead of the planned two.
When I informed the owner’s son, Gurpreet Singh, of my decision, his response was far from professional:
- He immediately hiked the single-night rate further to Rs. 4,000.
- When I firmly stood my ground and told him I would walk away and find accommodations elsewhere, he suddenly backtracked and reverted the price to Rs. 3,500.
This opportunistic haggle-at-the-desk culture is thoroughly unacceptable for any hospitality establishment.
Rather than offering warmth and hospitality to an exhausted guest, the management chose to capitalise on my weariness.
Room Quality & Basic Amenities
Substandard and Malodorous
Upon entering the room, it quickly became clear that the accommodation fell far short of basic hospitality standards.
Hence this Swarn Villa review is appropriate as it fails to be a review of any budget hotels Udaipur. Fellow travellers must treat it as one of the Udaipur travel tips.
- Missing Essentials: The room lacked even the most fundamental items. There were no dustbins anywhere in the room or bathroom, leaving no proper way to dispose of waste.
- Lack of Intercom/Communication: There was no intercom or internal phone system in the room to reach the front desk or request assistance. If you need anything, you are forced to physically walk out of your room to search for staff.
- Basic Amenities Withheld: I had to explicitly ask the staff just to get basic drinking water bottles in the room—something that should always be provided upon arrival as a standard courtesy. Water, though, was provided with excuses.
- Bathroom Conditions: The bathroom was in a dismal state. It had no exhaust fan, leading to improper ventilation, and suffered from a pervasive, foul smell that lingered throughout the night. To top it all, the bathroom didn’t have anti skid flow tiles on those I slipped twice, though, no damage was done.
- Lies – When I arrived, I noticed that a beware of the don sign on the entrance. Upon asking if there was a dog present, was conveniently lied that there was none. As I strolled around, I found a caged German Shepherd in the precincts.
- Monkey Affairs – The entire afternoon went struggling with sleep since, the entire property was alive managing monkeys that were causing a severe ruckus all over. While the staff was trying the shoo them off, they continued to jump over the metal roof alongside the rooms so it was impossible to catch a wink.
For a property charging premium rates, failing to provide clean, odour-free bathrooms and standard room fittings is unpardonable.
Walkway between the Room and Dining Area at The Swarn Villa
Dining & Kitchen Operations
Inefficient, Limited, and Bizarre
The food and beverage service at The Swarn Villa was another major area of failure.
- Extremely Limited Menu: The menu options were remarkably slim. Non-vegetarian options were virtually non-existent, with eggs being the sole exception on their in-house roster.
- No Stocked Ingredients: The kitchen does not maintain a supply of fresh ingredients. Orders are not prepared from an in-house inventory; instead, ingredients are fetched from local markets after you place an order.
- Extravagant Wait Times: Because ingredients are bought on-demand, even a simple meal order takes up to 90 minutes (1.5 hours) to be prepared and served.
- Outsourced Non-Veg Food: If you request non-vegetarian dishes beyond eggs, the property simply buys them from another local restaurant and serves them to you, acting merely as a middleman rather than preparing fresh food in their own kitchen. So, the chicken & mixed vegetables that I ordered looked exceptionally & poorly starved. They were not what I expected after detailing to Gurpreet my expectations and were totally abysmal to taste.
- Poor Quality – The tasteless aloo poori I requested for since the eggs were unavailable was made in their own kitchen. Despite an in-house preparation it was incredibly disastrous and shouldn’t have been ordered.
Absentee Management & Refusal to Address Grievances
Good management can often redeem a sub-par property through attentive service and genuine care.Unfortunately, management presence at The Swarn Villa was entirely non-existent.
Feeling dissatisfied with the state of affairs, I requested a face-to-face meeting with Gurpreet to discuss my concerns.
He flatly refused to come to the property, citing that he lived in Udaipur city—roughly 20 kilometres away from the villa—and had no intention of driving down to meet guests.
Instead of addressing my concerns in person or sending a manager to resolve the issues, he casually instructed me to “send feedback on WhatsApp.”
This level of disregard for guest satisfaction demonstrates a complete lack of accountability and professional pride.
Departure & Check-out Chaos
Surprise Charges and Denied Breakfast
My departure during check-out was as chaotic and unpleasant as my arrival.
Despite informing the staff well in advance about my intended check-out time, the bill was not ready when I came down to leave.
A tedious wait ensued while they scrambled to put together basic paperwork. Eventually they told me to get in touch with Gurpreet.
When I spoke to Gurpreet Singh over the phone to settle the bill, another disagreement arose:
- Contradictory Promises on Breakfast: Gurpreet insisted that I had to pay extra for breakfast. This directly contradicted the clear verbal commitment made earlier by his father, Mr. Satnam Singh, who had confirmed that breakfast was included in the room tariff.
- Unavailability of Simple Orders: Prior to checking out, I asked for a basic breakfast of bread and eggs. Shockingly, even this elementary request could not be fulfilled—there was no bread or eggs available in the kitchen. I asked for aloo poori that turned out to be disatsrous.
- Excuses Instead of Service: When I questioned the total lack of basic breakfast supplies, the staff shifted the blame onto the Vijay Dashmi (Dussehra) celebrations, claiming that festival disruptions prevented them from stocking essential food items.
Using a festival as an excuse for being unable to toast bread or cook eggs for a paying guest is laughable for any business operating in the hospitality industry. Especially when they served chicken for dinner the night before.
Final Verdict
The Swarn Villa, Udaipur is an establishment that severely fails to deliver on basic hospitality expectations.
From misleading pricing structures, aggressive overcharging, and absent management to poor road connectivity, smelly bathrooms, missing basic room features, and an almost non-existent kitchen service, my stay was a thoroughly disappointing experience.
If you are traveling through Rajasthan or looking for a peaceful getaway near Udaipur, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
There are numerous well-managed, accessible, and transparent hotels and homestays in and around Udaipur that value guest comfort and honesty—qualities that are entirely absent at The Swarn Villa.
Pros: None worth mentioning.
Cons: Off-road broken approach, 30 km outside Udaipur, dishonest pricing and sudden rate hikes, severe lack of room hygiene and amenities, bad bathroom smell, no intercom, delayed meal delivery (up to 90 mins), outsourced food, unhelpful absentee management, broken promises regarding breakfast inclusion.
