Tamatar Ki Chutney

Tamatar ki Chutney is a tangy, slightly sweet, and spicy chutney made with fresh tomatoes. It’s super versatile and pairs beautifully with parathas, pakoras, dal-chawal, idlis, dosa, or snacks.

Tamatar Ki Chutney Recipe (North Indian Style)

Ingredients

  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp oil (mustard oil or refined oil)
  • ½ tsp jeera (cumin seeds)
  • ½ tsp rai (mustard seeds)
  • 1–2 dry red chillies
  • 1–2 green chillies (chopped)
  • 1 tsp ginger (finely chopped/grated)
  • 1 tsp sugar or jaggery (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp haldi (turmeric powder)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Method

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add jeera + rai + dry red chilli → let them splutter.
  2. Add ginger + green chilli → sauté for a minute.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, haldi, and red chilli powder.
  4. Cook on medium flame till the tomatoes soften and the oil separates.
  5. Add sugar/jaggery → cook 2 more minutes (balances tanginess).
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves.

  • Garlic Tomato Chutney – Add 6–7 garlic cloves while sautéing.
  • South Indian Style – Add curry leaves, chana dal, urad dal, and grind chutney to a smooth paste.
