Vienna & Coffee
Vienna is not only the musical capital, but also the coffee capital of Europe.
Even though the Viennese coffee house culture is renowned the world over, Vienna was not the first city in history with a coffee house.
There were several coffee houses in Mecca as early as the 12th century. The first coffee house in Europe opened in Venice in 1647.
The first coffee houses in England were opened in 1650 and 1652. And in Vienna the first coffee house opened only in 1683.
The history of Viennese coffee house culture is closely linked to the end of the Siege of Vienna in 1683.
Legend has it that the Viennese citizen Georg Franz Kolschitzky (1640 – 1694) was the first to obtain a licence to serve coffee in the city following his heroic actions during the Siege of Vienna.
The coffee beans left behind by the Turks were the basis of his success.
However, the first coffee house in Vienna was actually opened by the Armenian spy Diodato. He served at the Viennese Imperial court and was a man full of secrets. He knew about the dark beans and the art of preparing coffee from his home country.
The first coffee houses already had several of the characteristics that are still typical of a Viennese-style coffee house today.
Waiters served a glass of water with every cup of coffee and they were equipped with card games and pool tables.
Today, modern Vienna offers many choices for cafes, restaurants, coffee shops and bars, and a huge variety of hot drinks that everyone loves.
And wherever you look, everywhere coffee will be served on a neat silver tray, with cold water in a glass and a spoon on it – in Vienna they pay attention to such details.
What is the history behind Maria Theresia Coffee?
About Maria Theresia Coffee, About Maria Theresia Coffee Set & About Maria Theresia Furniture
Maria Theresia, the only female sovereign of Austrian empire, was a great historical figure of 18th century. She inherited the crown, became ruling Archduchess at the age of 23 & ruled most of the Central Europe for 40 years.
She forged the cosmopolitan and Middle European heart of Trieste. During her reign the city went through a strong demographic, economic and social development, discovering its multi-ethnic nature.
As the only sea port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste became home to wealthy and adventurous entrepreneurs in the shipping, import, finance and insurance industries.
The thriving coffee industry in Trieste also began under Austria-Hungary, with the Austro-Hungarian government even awarding tax-free status to the city in order to encourage more commerce.
As it is evident from the name, the Maria Theresia Austrian Coffee was named after Maria Theresa, the Holy Roman Empress.
