Potbelly Cafe – Bihar’s Culinary Gift to Delhi

Potbelly Rooftop Cafe, Shahpur Jat, New Delhi Review

I have known Potbelly cafe and it’s lovely rooftop. It has been mentioned on so many occasions by friends. In fact, Vidhu even suggested lunch at their branch at Bihar Niwas Bhawan in Chanakyapuri.

However, the visit had been eluding me constantly. Since you may not know it, Potbelly runs Bihari speciality restaurants in Delhi by the same name. Also, this review is about the Potbelly Rooftop Cafe in Shahpur Jat.

So one fine evening, I found myself trotting up the narrow staircase of Potbelly Shahpur Jat. Most noteworthy that caught my eye about Potbelly was the way they had made use of the available space.

Limited space was so well utilised over the two distinct seating areas that Potbelly has. Try and grab a seat by the window if you are sitting in. You will love the view and thank me for it someday.

Though, if you are on the terrace, it is also a lovely experience except that this area is co-habited by the smoking junta.

Potbelly’s layout is though well spread out. The cafe has smaller tables for cosy conversations and at the same time couches for larger groups. Furthermore, the staff is friendly.

As we trudged up those difficult stairs, they escorted us and we were seated in no time. The menu appeared soon and so did glasses of water without having to ask for them.

We were just snacking so our menu order was limited. We ordered for a Meat Pakora Basket (an assortment of crisply fried mutton & chicken pakoras) and a portion of Ghoogni Chura (a spicy preparation of black chana or gram and fried flattened rice).

Both dishes came with their own condiments and were simply delicious. The flavours were balanced, the food had a crispness to them and the spices were just right. The condiments went well with the dishes especially the green chutney and the tomato chutney.

We ordered for a pot of masala chai at the end and it was a befitting finish to the entire meal. While they say it is a pot for two, it seems like one-pot delivers a little more than three cups. Surely, they are simply being generous. Kudos.

This time I was there just for snacking and the two dishes had left the stomach to be full. Hence, more food at Potbelly will have to wait for later. I will update this post soon with more feedback about the food at Potbelly. I wish they open in Gurgaon and it’ll be my favourite haunt for sure. Having said so, it may be a good idea for you to head out.

Finally, we paid around Rs.650 for the entire meal and that I think is an amazing price to pay in Delhi.

To Sum-It-Up: It was my first visit to the Bihari cuisine restaurant Potbelly and it did not disappoint. The food was delectable, the service was nice and the ambience superb. It is a must-visit.
