Chaach or Chaas or Buttermilk – Simple Chaach Recipe for Your Instant Summertime Cooler
Chaach or chaas is traditionally a part of every traditional North Indian meal. It is a must-have digestive after a spicy lunch. It also works as a body cooler on a hot summer day. Gurgaon is literally reeling under a heatwave. To compound the blessings of Lord Agni, the electricity board is doubly ensuring that we get enough of power fluctuation, that is if they bless us with a few hours of electricity. As of now, the area where I live is getting power outages of almost 4-5 hours a day.
Chaas is a dahi-based drink popular across the Indian subcontinent. It is also written chaach. In the Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent, it is called ghol. It is named majjiga in Telugu, moru in Tamil, majjige in Kannada, ale in Tulu. It is often called laban in the Old Dhaka in Bangladesh.
With all this going on, I decided to keep myself cool with a jug full of chaach that I made with rich creamy Greek-style yoghurt.
Why Greek-style yoghurt, you may ask? Well, I had just that in the fridge after my last sojourn to the supermarket. Let’s read about what kept me really cool & agile this hot and smouldering afternoon – chaas.
Point: I’ll do an article on the benefits of Chaach shortly. So stay tuned for that. For more simple and cool yoghurt based recipes, click here.
Making this chaas does not require any special skills, all you need is a good blender. You just have to mix everything together till combined and then pour into glasses and enjoy. It’s that simple!

I am dying hard fan of that taste.
I wouldn’t know the exact recipe Ranjeet ji, however, you can try the following, boil the chicken till it is 3/4th done. Make a spicy gravy with ghee and tomatoes. Cook the remainder of the chicken till done in the gravy.
