An Honest Review of Dum Noorani, Solan: Splendid Ambience Overwhelmed by Unfortunate Realities
Solan, the charming gateway to the higher hills of Himachal Pradesh, has seen a steady rise in culinary spots designed to attract both locals and travellers winding their way up towards Shimla.
Among the newer, visually ambitious establishments situated along the highway is Dum Noorani Barog – a Mughlai restaurant in Solan
It is located on the ground floor of Platinum Mall-V, Solan-Shimla Bypass, right in front of the Toyota Showroom. The location is such that you don’t expect fine dining Solan Barog Bypass there.
On paper, the restaurant promises a regal affair, evoking the timeless charm of classic Indian dining with grand archways, hand-painted motifs, and the comforting promise of aromatic dum cooking.
However, a dining experience is rarely defined by visual aesthetic alone.
It is an intricate synthesis of sensory entry points, hospitality, beverage craft, and, above all, the execution of the kitchen.
While Dum Noorani may be considered one of the best restaurants in Solan, it manages to impress with its interior setup and floor service; a series of glaring culinary missteps and severe outdoor hygiene issues turn what should have been an enjoyable meal into a deeply conflicted experience.

Ambience: Splendid Aesthetics and Thoughtful Layouts
The decor choices are undoubtedly the restaurant’s strongest asset.
Stepping past the threshold into the main dining hall of Dum Noorani feels akin to entering a grand, light-filled courtyard from a bygone era.
The decor choices are undoubtedly the restaurant’s strongest asset, reflecting a clear vision to create an elegant, royal sanctuary away from the noise and dust of the highway.
The colour palette is dominated by a crisp, pristine white offset by deep cobalt blue accents, drawing immediate inspiration from traditional Jaipur pottery and classical Mughal architecture.
Architectural Details: The walls feature textured plasterwork paired with intricate indigo floral murals that stretch up towards the ceiling.
Inset arches house subtle decorative pieces, while large wall-mounted mirrors with ornate vintage frames add depth and warmth to the spacious room.
Layout and Spacing: The dining space is splendidly laid out, avoiding the common trap of overcrowding.
Tables are well-spaced throughout the hall, allowing guests ample privacy and room to converse comfortably without feeling squeezed against neighbouring diners.
Cutlery and Tableware: Grounding the space is classic black-and-white checkered marble flooring, which contrasts beautifully with dark table tops and white wooden chairs with woven cane backs.
The tables are set with high-quality, tasteful cutlery and crockery—from patterned underplates to crisp glassware—demonstrating exceptional attention to tabletop presentation.
Lighting and Features: Suspended from the high ceilings are grand, distressed-white chandeliers fitted with candle-style bulbs, casting a soft, inviting glow across the dining area.
The undisputed focal point of the room is a magnificent multi-tiered marble fountain nestled against a decorative arched backdrop, anchoring the regal mood.
Unfortunately, the elegant fountain doesn’t work. I hope they get it fixed at the earliest for patrons to enjoy it’s presence.
Food: An Extensive Menu with Promising Choices
The kitchen offers an extensive main course selection.
When perusing the food menu at Dum Noorani, one is immediately struck by its impressive breadth and thoughtful variety.
The kitchen offers an extensive main course selection that thoughtfully caters to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diners.
Vegetarian Variety: Far from being an afterthought, the vegetarian section features a rich spread of traditional North Indian staples, paneer specialities, seasonal vegetables, and rich slow-cooked lentils.
The descriptions promise authentic gravy preparations, fragrant spices, and freshly baked breads straight from the tandoor.
Non-Vegetarian Offerings: Meat lovers are treated to a robust selection of Mughlai and Punjabi classics, ranging from succulent kebabs to hearty curries and signature dum-cooked options.
On paper, the menu looks exceptional, promising a well-rounded feast for families and large groups with diverse dietary preferences.
Service: Professional Hospitality Anchored by Vishal Kapoor
While the physical environment establishes a high standard, the human element on the floor works hard to maintain it.
On-floor operations during our meal were managed with commendable professionalism, largely owing to the efforts of steward Vishal Kapoor.
From the moment we were seated, Vishal demonstrated the qualities of a seasoned hospitality professional.
He greeted us with a genuine welcome and maintained an attentive yet unobtrusive presence throughout the afternoon.
Menu Command: Vishal possessed a thorough knowledge of the extensive menu. He guided us through the options with total confidence, answering questions about ingredients, preparation styles, and spice levels effortlessly.
Pacing and Table Manner: Drinks and cutlery were arranged promptly, orders were confirmed accurately, and table clearances were handled quietly and efficiently between courses.
Floor Presence: Even when navigating feedback regarding specific culinary letdowns, Vishal handled the interaction with grace, patience, and absolute professionalism.
The front-of-house team, under his attentive watch, ensures that guests feel genuinely valued while seated at the table.
Vishal Kapoor’s floor management stands out as a high point of the visit.
Beverages & Biryani: A Great Drink List vs. A Dismal Mutton Biryani
In delightful contrast to the hot food, the beverage list turned out to be a highlight of the meal.
The disparity in the kitchen’s capabilities becomes most starkly apparent when comparing the beverage selection directly against the restaurant’s signature rice preparation.
A Refreshing Beverage Selection
In delightful contrast to the hot food, the beverage list turned out to be a highlight of the meal.
Freshness and Balance: Drinks served at the table were prepared with care. Mocktails and traditional coolers arrived ice-cold, vibrant in presentation, and perfectly balanced in sweetness and acidity.
Taste Profile: Whether opting for citrus-forward blends or traditional spiced Indian coolers, the drinks provided a crisp, refreshing accompaniment that cleared the palate beautifully.
The bar staff clearly understands proportion and flavour balance.
Dum Noorani Mutton Biryani: A Complete Disappointment
Regrettably, the same praise cannot be extended to what should be the crown jewel of the kitchen: the Mutton Biryani.
I had ordered a portion of Mutton Hyderabadi Dum Khazana Biryani. It was served with pickled onions and a bowl of jeera raita.
For an establishment named Dum Noorani, serving a poorly executed dum noorani mutton biryani is an unforgivable and unforgettable flaw.
Flavour and Texture: True dum biryani relies on a delicate balance of whole aromatic spices, long-grain basmati rice, and tender meat cooked together on a low flame.
What arrived at our table was dry, devoid of aroma, and completely lacking the deep, layered richness expected of a true dum dish.
Execution: The mutton pieces were tough, chewy, and inadequately seasoned, while the rice lacked the fragrant infusion of ghee, saffron, and caramelised onions.
They seemed to have been wrongly cut and hardly marinated and boiled before being assembled in the biryani format.
Rather than a royal feast, it tasted like plain spiced rice hastily combined with dry, excessively boiled meat. This is usually done with meat that has gone quite old.
It was, quite simply, a bad biryani that failed on every basic culinary expectation.
The Entrance: A Severe First Impression Ruined by Stench
At Dum Noorani, that critical first impression is met with a severe health and sensory hazard.
No matter how beautiful a restaurant’s interiors are or how courteous the stewards prove to be, a dining experience begins the moment a guest arrives at the property.
At Dum Noorani, that critical first impression is met with a severe health and sensory hazard.
Right at the main entrance of the restaurant lies an overflowing sewage drain.
The resulting odour is overwhelming—a pungent, nauseating stench that hits diners full force before they even step through the doors.
Dampened Appetite: Smell is intrinsically linked to taste.
Arriving at a fine-dining establishment with the smell of raw sewage lingering in the air immediately ruins the appetite and leaves an unhygienic impression that is hard to shake off once seated.
The Sum It Up The Culinary Insight
Management Helpline: Inability to Clean the Source
What makes the situation particularly frustrating is the apparent inability of the staff and management to remediate the issue.
When I brought the terrible odour to the attention of the restaurant manager, he readily acknowledged the problem, confirming that they were aware of the overflowing drain right outside.
He even cited that the restaurant’s owner, who lives in Chandigarh, was aware of the situation.
However, he expressed complete helplessness regarding a solution, citing external municipal or drainage constraints.
While external infrastructural issues can pose real challenges, a fine-dining establishment cannot afford to remain passive when its primary entryway is compromised.
Leaving raw sewage to pool unchecked without temporary barriers, neutralising agents, or alternative arrangements reflects a serious gap in property maintenance.
Until management finds a way to permanently clear the stench at their doorstep, the stunning ambience within will remain heavily overshadowed by an unacceptable entrance.
This ruins the entire impact made by the Dum Noorani menu and ambience and brings up such a Dum Noorani Solan review.
