Jeera Rice | Jeera Pulao Recipe – Jeera rice or Zeera rice is an Indian and Pakistani dish consisting of rice and cumin seeds.

It is a popular dish in North India and Pakistan as an everyday rice dish. The Hindi term for cumin seeds is “jeera”, thus owing to the name of the dish. It’s possible that this rice recipe was introduced to the Indian cuisine by the Mughals and it soon became one of the most in style dishes to be served in every Indian household.

Jeera pulao is easy to prepare, unlike biryani. “Zeera” is the Hindi word for cumin seeds, often pronounced Jeera. Use this recipe to make fluffy, perfectly cooked rice which is full of flavour, but super simple to make.

In this recipe, rice is simply cooked with cumin seeds & ghee or butter. In some cases, other whole spices like cardamoms, bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon & mace are also sautéed in ghee to impart deeper flavours to the rice.

How to make homemade Jeera Rice or Zeera Rice?

We are talking about the perfect jeera rice, that is steamed and takes about 10 minutes to make. Yes, only 10 minutes! And I’m going to show you how to make jeera rice just like this.

Jeera rice only needs a few simple ingredients. Ghee or Butter, salt and the ubiquitous jeera (or cumin seeds).

The perfect rice to water ratio for jeera rice is 1:2. Which means for every cup of rice, you need two cups of water.

The rice is steamed in the liquid in a pan which is covered so that the steam does not escape. This rice to water ratio ensures that the rice is cooked just right – where every grain is fluffy and separate from each other.

This recipe is different from the Masala rice recipe that uses other whole spices. Jeera rice or jeera pulao uses just jeera or cumin seeds and marries it with the goodness of basmati rice.

Tip: Soak the rice for half an hour or so prior to cooking. Suppose you have not soaked the rice prior, give it three pressure whistles instead of one otherwise. You can use oil instead of ghee, but ghee fluffs up the rice and gives it a fantastic aroma. If there is still liquid in the cooker upon removing the lid, let it remain on fire until the water dries up.

Ingredients

  • 0.5 Cup Basmati Rice Washed clean & soaked for 30 mins
  • 1 Teaspoon Ghee
  • 1.5 Teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Cup Water
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds or Jeera

Instructions

  • Soak the rice for half an hour after washing it thoroughly. You can soak this directly in the pressure cooker.
  • To start cooking add salt, sprinkle jeera or cumin seeds on top and then pour ghee at the end.
  • Close the lid of the pressure cooker and on it goes on fire till it sounds one whistle.
  • Remove the pressure top and let the steam escape.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork to separate the cooked grains.
  • Serve hot with the curry of your choice.

Notes

  • Use really good quality basmati rice for this jeera rice recipe.
  • If you are cooking zeera rice in a pressure cooker, you can increase the rice to water ratio to 1:2.25
  • You can also add whole spices like bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves to this and make chawal garam masala.
  • Garnish on jeera pulao is an optional, but feel free to top it up with some finely chopped coriander leaves should you want.
