Tomato Date Soup | An Easy Winter Soup Warming & Nutritious
Tomato Date Soup | An Easy Winter Soup Warming & Nutritious – This absolutely comforting tomato date soup is all about well balanced sweet & sour flavours.
This homemade tomato date soup recipe is a pressure cooker recipe so it doesn’t take much time to get ready. It also allows you to infuse the soup with all the spice goodness that you need for a day.
How to make homemade tomato date soup?
This homemade tomato date soup recipe is a very simple recipe and that makes it the best reason for you to make it and savour it on a cold winter evening.
The process is really simple. All you have to do is cut your tomatoes and throw them into a pressure cooker with all the other ingredients like, dates, ginger, garlic, salt & pepper with some water.
Deposit the pressure cooker on the flame and wait for 4 whistles. Then let the pressure release by itself. Now empty the cooker in a skillet or a sauce pan and bring to a boil.
Correct the seasoning, add Basil Leaves, Nigella seeds and simmer for a few minutes (3 if you please) and serve this magnificent soup with some buttered garlic bread toasts.
Is tomato date soup healthy?
Homemade tomato date soup is healthy. It is rich in nutrients especially vitamin C, A & iron. When compared to raw ones, cooked tomatoes have more lycopene, an important antioxidant that protect us against free radicals.
Similarly, Dates are full of nutrition, especially dry dates. Dry dates contain several essential vitamins and minerals with fibres. Dates are known for their rich concentration of antioxidants which are beneficial for your cardiac and pulmonary health.
A homemade tomato date soup is also lower in sodium when compared to the canned soup.
Therefore, a bowl of fresh homemade soup is not only tasty & comforting but is also rich in nutrients.
How do I thicken tomato date soup?
I usually sieve this tomato date soup directly without blending it. As a result, the soup comes out thin which some of you might not relish. So do feel free to thicken your soup.
Cornstarch slurry, butter & flour paste, potato starch, arrowroot powder are some of the most common ingredients used to thicken tomato date soup. You can also use a freshly boiled potato to thicken your soups.
But if you ask me, I like the texture of the soup, though slightly runny, just when it comes off the flame.
How do I spice tomato date soup?
Black pepper, red chilli flakes, paprika & cinnamon spice up & take flavour the soup to the next level.
You can also throw in a couple of green chillies while you are pressure cooking the tomatoes to add the heat.
Can I use canned tomatoes or tomato puree for tomato date soup?
Nothing beats the taste that you get from fresh juicy tomatoes. However, in case you are unable to get your hands on fresh tomatoes, you can use canned tomatoes or even tomato puree.
Do note that you will need to add more water or stock to alter the consistency of the tomato date soup. You’ll also need to give the pressure for one whistle only.
Vegan Tomato Date Soup Tips
This tomato soup uses butter, however the vegan cause is not lost. Simply, replace usua butter with equal amount of extra virgin olive oil or sesame seeds oil.
Serving suggestions for tomato date soup
Usually people love their tomato date soup with some toasted bread or croutons. I have also paired it with garlic bread.
However, to enjoy this as a dinner meal, you can pair it with salads, grilled vegetables, cheese toasts, sandwiches, spring rolls or grilled chicken for a wholesome nutrition.
